The Ian Woosnam Golf Academy
A pathway to success
Dear Young Golfer,
Welcome to my brand-new golf school.
I have wanted to create another Champion for a while now which is why we have set up “The Ian Woosnam Golf Academy”.
My beginning was quite simple. My father was a farmer & he took up golf. Dad wanted the family to play golf so he became a member of Llanymynech Golf Club where he got handicap down to 6. He introduced me & my two brothers to the game & mum played too. Keith, my older brother, became a reasonable player; Gareth, my younger brother got his handicap down to 1 playing for Wales at youth level & I went on to become World Number One.
It was at Llanymynech Golf Club that I met Andy Griffiths & as youngsters we completed against each other. Andy became the PGA Professional at Llanymynech & in later years I would get him to check out my swing to make sure I was always in good shape for tournament play. Andy has been professional for 50 years & we remain friends today.
It was a long journey on the way to the top of the world & there were a lot of trials & tribulations. There were many times where you think “is it all worth it”. At one stage of my career, when I was about 20 years fold, I nearly gave up & I took a Club Pro’s job at Oswestry Golf Club. I had a lucky break getting a sponsor from a local company, MTM Engineering, & the rest is history.
During that climb to the top of the World, I worked hard, practised as much as anyone, travelled to far off places & lived out of a suitcase, but I enjoyed it. Then when I discovered I could compete, I started to improve. I got better & better before I won the US Masters in 1991 & become World Number One.
Our company, RM Estates Ltd., run three golf courses, Malkins Bank Golf Club, Queens Park Golf Club & Ellesmere Port Golf Club. These were all former municipal golf courses but now they are members club with visitors welcome. My idea for my golf academy came from my own beginning when I joined my life-long frind & now business partner, Tony Minshall, at Hill Valley Golf & Country Club.
Tony’s father, Albert Minshall, took a leap in the dark in the early seventies & built Hill Valley Golf Course. Tony, who has also been a PGA professional for 50 years & myself, worked for Albert on the course & played golf every afternoon. We practised hard but also enjoyed our life away from golf. We played every day & were very competitive. We both started out on the tour together. Albert sponsored many young golfers, not all of them succeeded as I did, but he had serveral players who made it to the European Tour, achieving their tour card. Those who didn’t achieve their dream went on to be busnessmen or PGA golf professional, 99 per cent of them enjoyed a fruitful future. This was a testimony to Albert’s vision & much like my own father Harold, they both love golf.
My brother Gareth will manage & operate the Golf Academy & there will be a PGA Professional on hand daily. He is also passionate about the game & it’s our vision to create a world beater. Gareth has seen at first hand what it takes to make it to the top & I have full trust in him to make sure everything runs smoothly. The itinerary for the academy can be found on the leaflets contained in the brochure.
Going forward, I do hope you will join our team in the first ever residential golf academy for young golfers in the UK. You will see in the brochure, information on how the school will be operated, the people involved, & how we will look after your welfare & wellbeing, which is a major focus of my school. I will come to see you at least 3 times a year where I will assess your game & help you as much as possible. I’d like to wish you every success & hope you too can realise your dreams.
